2/1/14 Another Perfect Christmas Day

The snow started falling again last night.  Silent, insidious, thick.  We woke up to find another fresh coating blanketing the neighborhood.  Dad and Jamie went out to shovel, but soon the flakes were heavier, fatter, nickel-sized or better, falling from yet another grey sky.  There will be no sun today.  Looking out of the window at the huge flakes and the trees in the backyard, I thought, “Another perfect Christmas Day” (sound of needle screeching across record) – except, it’s February 1. Everyone is ready for a change.

It is 10:30 a.m. and the plow still has not been around.  Mom and Jamie cannot go to TaeKwonDo this morning because they can’t get out of the driveway.  The street is filled with snow, both fresh and that which has been blowing and drifting.

The backyard poses an interesting challenge for me.  The wind has been strong, blowing the snow up in drifts up to 3 feet.  Going to the bathroom outside is a ponderous question, even with the walkway that has been shoveled out for me.  I have found my own solution to this.  The wind has blown the snow away from the house to form a narrow passage.  I go out the back door, make a right, and press my body against the side of the house.  In this way, I can utilize the snow passageway.  From there I shoot out into the yard proper, run my circles, and do what I have to do.

I have an old injury to one of my hind legs.  When I am outside too long, I have to tuck it up against my belly and run/hobble along on three legs until I get into the house and warm up.  Even my coat does not protect against this.  Going for a walk is out of the question.

I am finding small spaces to curl up in to comfort myself.  If I can have my head, back, and rear pressed against a surface, I find it soothing.  I am upset that there is no sun shining through the windows so that I can bask under the dining room table, or in my spot at the top of the stairs.

The winter day outside is very beautiful.  However, I am more than ready for a Spring thaw!

Woof!  Love, Maggie
