1/2/2015 The Dutch Oven

Last night I crawled under the covers next to Mom with my tail by her pillow and my head sticking out by her knees.

I was a little on the gassy side. Mom said, “One more out of you and I’m going to give you the Dutch Oven treatment!” My stomach settled down not long after that.

Now, for my master plan. I leaned my head on Mom’s knees, and of course I looked so cute and adorable, she didn’t want to move. As the night progressed, I gradually scooted closer and closer, until I lay directly across her knees. Every time Mom moved, I moved with her. The upshot of all of this was that Mom could not straighten out her legs, and thus I cramped her style all night.

Threaten me with a Dutch Oven! Muahahaha!

9/20/14 A good day – at the beach??

Mom and Dad got up early this morning to go to the doctor for Round 1 of tests before the operation.  They did not put me in the crate; rather, opened the door to Jamie’s room and let me bunk in with him for a bit. Not that I let him sleep.  I was too pushy to get under the covers for that!

When Mom and Dad came home, they had something to eat and then Dad went to work. Mom said the people at the doctor’s office were very kind and gentle; nonetheless, she felt tired, wanted a painkiller, to rest a bit, and “pretend like the office visit did not happen.” Mom got into bed and I happily followed suit.

It is just the bare twinges of Fall.  The trees, which are too many to count since our back yard borders on the woods, have just a touch of crispness in the leaves. Only a few are starting to change color. Mom says when the wind blows through the trees, it sounds like gentle waves at the ocean.

Mom fell asleep and when she woke up, she pet my tummy and said she’d had the most marvelous dream that she was sleeping on a lounge chair, covered up in a beach blanket, with a cabana umbrella over her head.  She said she could hear the water gently lapping up on the shore, and when she woke, she didn’t know at first where she was, or if she had sand between her toes.

I am glad Mom had a good rest. After she rested, she, Jamie, and I went out and worked in the yard a bit.  The sun was warm, and it made a pleasing pattern with the plants:

It has become cloudy, and started to rain.  I don’t mind and neither does Mom. She said, “We had a good day at the beach, didn’t we, Maggie?” and laughed.  I smiled back at her. We did.

1/27/14 Lurking

Can you see me?

Image

I found a good spot under the dining room table that allows my face to be in the sun, my butt in the shade, and a good view (if I turn my head) of the front window so I can spot intruders.  I like lurking beneath the table.  It’s hard for my people to wrangle me into the crate from here.

The news has been slow lately.  I mean, really slow.  The “polar vortex” seems to have come back, and everyone is house-bound. The only thing amiss I saw on the street today was a garbage can that got blown over.  So I put up a barking fit about that, hair raised and everything!  I’m a good guard dog, and if I see anything out of place on my street, I let everyone know.  Then I go back to My Spot under the table.  The sun feels gooood.  I’m glad that it is out.  I don’t like when we don’t see the sun for days at a time.  I can’t wait for it to warm up.  An added bonus to under-the-table-lurking:  when I roll over, I don’t fall down the stairs.  I have a “spot” on the stairs, too, but sometimes, I roll over in my sleep and tumble right down them.  Ouch!

Today when Mom checked the temp in Zeus it registered -6.  That’s no wind chill, either.  It’s too cold to snow, but the snow that we do have has been blowing and drifting.  The place looks like a white desert!  I have to wade through it to get to a clear spot in the back yard to do my business.  And there is a clear spot:  the crop circle where Mom and Dad put the pool up last year.  The snow blows right off it and lets me have a nice, round, target.  However, that stiff wind blows right up my tail, and I’ve been putting up a good fight about going out.  You humans have it lucky.  I have to run around in a circle three times in the snow before I can “go”.  (Don’t ask.  It’s a dog thing.)

Tomorrow is my birthday.  I’m going to be 2 years old!  Wait – in human years, I’m 14!  Maybe it’s time to show some adolescent attitude!  (“Here, sir, let me chew that shoe.”)  I’m excited about my birthday.  My people bought me a bag of stuff, but when I went to inspect it with my nose, they told me to “go lay down” and hung it up.  I hate being told to go lay down.  I’ve been looking at that bag all day and wondering what is in it.  Mom said she was going to make me a special birthday dinner, too.  I hope it’s wet food.  I’m getting tired of dry.  I’ll post again tomorrow and let you know how everything went.  Thanks for reading!

9/27/13 Undercover Angel/House Devil

Image

Here I am, sleeping like an angel.  Move over, Mom!  Woof!

Whoever invented covers ought to get some kind of award.  They are the best things ever!  Now that I have found the covers, I don’t know how I ever got along without them.  Soooo comfy.

Mom was really sore at me, despite my leaving adorable pictures on her computer to soften her up.

Jamie got sick in school today, and Mom had to run and grab him, and didn’t have time to put me in the crate since it was an emergency.  20 minutes flat and I destroyed the house.  I guess I still have my anxiety issues at separation.

I don’t think Mom would have been so angry except that Jamie was ill and she had to deal with that, and on top of it I really left her a mess to clean.  She had just mopped the floors, too, and in hindsight, it probably wasn’t the best idea to toss the garbage can over.  But I didn’t realize Jamie was sick!  I thought Mom was just leaving me.  When Mom got Jamie home, I jumped into bed with him and rolled over so that the entire length of my body was pressing against him.  I wanted him to know that I was sorry he wasn’t feeling well.  I stayed with him until he got up.  Then we both had a snack and I sat with him on the couch.  I suppose Mom’s not too mad at me anymore, seeing as how I helped take care of Jamie.

Speaking of snacks, here’s a recipe for dog treats that was suggested by Far Fetched Friends (www.farfetchedfriends.wordpress.com):

 Homemade Dog Treat Recipe
Peanut Butter Puppy Poppers

2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth)
1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 375’F. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk, then add to dry ingredients and mix well. Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Bake for 20 minutes on a greased baking sheet until lightly brown. Cool on a rack, then store in an airtight container.

When Mom bakes the treats, she’s going to post a picture!  That is, when I’m out of the doghouse!

Woof!

9/25/13 The Joys of Sleeping

Last night I slept great on the Human Bed because of a “happy accident”.  See, Mom was in the bathroom, putting on her 15 layers of lotion (that tastes really good when I lick her on the face), and curled up in her spot next to the pillow.  Dad is still iffy about me sleeping on the bed, and he said, “Get that dog off the pillow!” Mom was all, “I’ve got to get into bed anyways” and tried – emphasis on tried – to scoot me over.  But all she did was succeed in getting my butt under the covers.

“Don’t put that dog under the covers!  Hey!  No!”

“I’m not putting her under the covers; she just ended up there.”

Well, once I got the feel of those cozy comforters, I knew…there was no way I was moving an inch.  Nope.  Besides, I was gassy, ’cause I gulped dinner down fast, and the blankets kind of muffled the fumes.  So it worked out for everybody.  I didn’t move a paw all night and in the morning, was the first to greet Mom as she groggily reached for the alarm.  Slurp!
